The Enemies of the Soul
1 John 2:15-17

Flesh: (149 times in NT)

  • Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God (1 Cor 15:50)
  • It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. (John 6:63)
  • For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. (Galatians 5:17) è (John 3:3-5)
  • Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. (Matthew 26:41)
  • Bound for corruption. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. (Galatians 6:8)
  • I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. (Romans 7:25)
  • But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. (Romans 13:14)

The Solution:

  • Christ put on flesh (John 1:14)
  • And suffered and was put to death in that body of flesh (1 Pet 3:18/Col 1:22)
  • So that he might slay the enmity between us and God  by the cross
  • Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: Ephesians 2:15-16
  • Now we are able to crucify our flesh (Gal 4:27)
  • And make no provision for it (Rom 14:13)

World: (241 times in NT)

  • It’s not to be loved, else the love of the Father isn’t in you. (1 John 2:15)
  • Enemy of the gospel. And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. (Mark 4:19)
  • The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. John 7:7
  • Jesus Christ refused to pray for it. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. John 17:9
  • It has it’s own god. (2 Corinthians 4:4)
  • Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. James 4:4
  • It’s fashions pass away (1 Cor 7:31)
  • It’s sorrow works death (2 Cor 7:10)
  • Demas loved it and forsook Paul 2 Tim 4:10
  • It will pass away. (1 John 2:17)

Solution

  • And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2
  • Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: (Galatians 1:4)

Devil (the pride of life/to be desired to make one wise)

  • Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. (Ezekiel 28:12)
  • Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. (1 Timothy 3:6)
  • Seeks to oppress. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Acts 10:38
  • Seeks someone to devour. (1 Pet 5:8)
  • He sets snares (1 Tim 3:7/2 Tim 2:26)
  • Looks for a place. Neither give place to the devil. Ephesians 4:27

Solution

  • We must have the whole armour to withstand him (Eph 6:11)
  • If we resist him he will flee from us (Jas 4:7)
  • Christ judged him in his death (John 16:22), and ultimately destroyed him (Heb 2:14), and so he’s destined for a lake of fire (Rev 20:10)
